I Am is a new collection of portraits by award-winning photographer Allie Crewe, commissioned by SICK! Festival and developed in partnership with domestic abuse charity, SafeLives. Her bold and powerful images bear witness to the lives and experiences of survivors of domestic violence from Manchester and across the UK.
SICK! Festival will present 12 images as a public exhibition in St Peter’S Square and across Greater Manchester’s Metrolink network. Taking the project into the heart of the city, they aim to challenge the narratives around domestic abuse and the perceptions of those affected.
When a person leaves a violent or controlling relationship they have often lost their core identity. I Am is an opportunity for transformation, for new identities to emerge and for new journeys to begin.
Allie Crewe is a photographer who seeks narratives of survival and resilience, exploring the stories of those who grow, who build a new lives and embrace change. Through an intensive, research-based approach, she identifies tenderness, beauty and vulnerability in her sitters. In 2019, she won the BJP Portrait of Britain. She has been artist in residence with SafeLives throughout the development of I Am.
SafeLives is aUK-wide charity dedicated to ending domestic abuse, for everyone and for good. The organisation works with organisations across the UK to transform the response to domestic abuse.
