We are looking for exciting and diverse artists to deliver creative workshops and/or facilitated conversations as part of our SMASH SICK! Mental Health Arts Programme

SMASH is a creative social prescribing project that offers participants a range of creative, innovative experiences residents of North Manchester who have been referred to us through mental health services in the community.

Participants referred to SICK! will consult with our Creative Producer and a dedicated Mental Health Practitioner to develop a menu of engagement. They will also both be present through the delivery of all elements of the process to offer support, continuity, and help maintain a safe working environment for all involved.

We are looking for artists to deliver two elements:

Participatory Workshops
Artist led workshops developing creativity as a way of exploring their own experiences. The sessions will be carefully pitched to enable participants to participate in ways that they are comfortable with. These sessions are aimed to be up to 2-3 hours long for a group of up to 10 participants.

Creative Conversations: Facilitated conversations with artists about their work, the challenges they have faced and their approach to managing their own mental health and wellbeing. We envisage these to be intimate events for a group of up to 10 participants.

You can lead either a Participatory Workshop(s) or be the subject of the Creative Conversation series, or both.

All sessions will be held at a venue in Harpurhey on Friday mornings from 10.30am between December 2021 – June 2022.

Submission Process

For the Participatory Workshops we are asking artists to submit their proposal for a stand-alone workshop between 2-3 hours in length with a brief outline of content, objectives and outputs.

For the Creative Conversations we are asking for a brief outline of the themes/topics and discussions you would be interested in leading. From there we will consult with you to find a relevant focus for the event based around your portfolio and artistic practice.

Please send all submissions to

Deadline for submissions is 12th November 2021. Interviews will be held from 22nd November 2021.

  • Participatory Workshops: £250 per session inclusive of planning
  • Creative Conversations: £250 per event inclusive of planning

We will host 6 Participatory Workshop sessions and 6 Creative Conversations Between the delivery period of December 2021 and June 2022

Other elements of the SMASH programme we are delivering are:

  • EXPLORE:  A guided programme of creative walks using photography and creative writing to encourage people to look differently at their environment. Participants will explore the ways in which their environment affects their mental health, exercising whilst connecting with people from their neighbourhood with similar experience
  • SEE & HEAR: Participants attend a series of trips to performances, films and exhibitions to experience artistic works that explore aspects of mental health and well-being followed by facilitated group conversations. These visits will draw on SICK’s programmes and the cultural offers of organisations across Greater Manchester.
